How to compare written estimates
The Federal Trade Commission recommends getting multiple written estimates and checking that they describe the work, materials, completion timing, and price. A major price difference deserves an explanation; it may reflect a different scope, material allowance, crew, permit assumption, warranty, or exclusion.
Do not automatically select the lowest price. Compare the underlying work, verify credentials where required, and avoid pressure to make an immediate decision or pay the full project price upfront. State rules about deposits, licensing, cancellation, and contract language vary.
