Before an emergency

Locate the home’s main water shutoff and make sure an adult in the household knows how it is operated. Do not force a valve that is stuck, damaged, corroded, or unfamiliar.

Treat these signs as urgent

Turn off water only when it is safe and you understand the correct valve. Contact an emergency plumber, utility, property manager, or other qualified professional when you see active flooding, a burst or separated pipe, water near electrical equipment, sewage backup, a rapidly growing ceiling bulge, or structural movement.

When water is near outlets, wiring, appliances, or the electrical panel, avoid entering standing water or touching energized equipment. Emergency conditions are not the time to experiment with DIY repairs.

A simple monthly leak check

Walk the same route each month so changes are easier to notice. Use a flashlight and look without dismantling equipment.

  1. Kitchen: Look under the sink, around the dishwasher, refrigerator water line, disposal, faucet base, and cabinet floor.
  2. Bathrooms: Check around toilet bases, supply valves, sink traps, tubs, showers, and nearby walls or flooring.
  3. Laundry: Inspect visible washer hoses, connections, drain area, and the floor beneath or behind the machine.
  4. Mechanical area: Look around the water heater, boiler, condensate drain, water treatment equipment, and visible piping.
  5. Basement or crawlspace: Notice stains, damp insulation, mineral deposits, musty odors, or unexplained moisture.
  6. Exterior: Check hose bibs, irrigation connections, unusual wet spots, and water that is not draining away from the building.

Document anything unusual with dated photographs. A small stain that does not change may be old; a stain that grows, darkens, feels damp, or returns needs investigation.

Use the water meter to check for unexplained flow

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends comparing the water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. Turn off faucets and make sure toilets, irrigation, appliances, ice makers, humidifiers, and other water-using equipment are not running. Record the meter reading, wait about two hours, and check again.

A changed reading suggests water moved somewhere, but it does not prove where or why. Automatic equipment, shared meters, irrigation, softeners, humidifiers, and other systems can affect the result. Repeat the test or ask the utility or a plumber for help when the reading is unclear.

Check a toilet for a silent leak

EPA WaterSense suggests placing a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank and checking the bowl after about 10 minutes. Color appearing in the bowl can indicate water is leaking past the flapper or another tank component. Flush promptly afterward so the coloring does not stain.

Follow the toilet manufacturer’s instructions before replacing parts. A constantly running toilet, recurring fill cycles, visible cracks, movement at the base, or water on the floor can justify professional help.

Where leak sensors can help

Simple moisture alarms can be placed near high-consequence areas such as a water heater, washing machine, sump area, refrigerator water line, dishwasher, or sink cabinet. Whole-home flow monitors can look for unusual water-use patterns, and some systems can close a compatible shutoff valve.

These devices reduce response time; they do not eliminate inspection, maintenance, or correct installation. Before buying, consider power source, alarm volume, phone dependence, Wi-Fi reliability, valve compatibility, subscription cost, notification sharing, sensor placement, and how the device is tested.

When to call a professional

  • The meter indicates unexplained flow and the source is not obvious.
  • A leak is concealed behind a wall, ceiling, floor, cabinet, or appliance.
  • You see mold-like growth, recurring dampness, damaged materials, or sewage.
  • A shutoff valve does not operate normally.
  • The repair involves soldering, gas appliances, electrical equipment, structural materials, or local permit requirements.
  • The same leak returns after a repair.

Ask the plumber to explain the source, proposed scope, materials, access damage, testing method, warranty, and whether related drying or restoration work is needed.
